Recommend Reconditioned Tools

I recently purchased a combo kit to do some work around the house.

I just needed something small and portable, so my choices came down between the factory reconditioned Milwaukee 2490-82 and new 2490-22 Cordless Driver & Hackzall Combo Kit.

The reconditioned 2490-82 cost $169.55 and the new 2490-22 cost $199.99 (about a $30 difference for a few marks). Most probably wouldn't be able to tell this was a reconditioned combo kit by looking at the picture on the left (took the picture with my phone after I removed the bubble wraps).

I would definitely recommend promoting reconditioned tools: it's cheaper, it's just as good as new, customer receives a full manufacturer warranty and a 100% Tool King Satisfaction guarantee.

A: From first impression, I would assume this is a site that has information on horses/farming. However, when clicking on the links, it only contains Banner Ads. I would recommend you add informational content on your site based on what you promised on your home page:

"As in bygone days of the country mercantile, our hope is to meet your needs, from human to animal. The country mercantile store used to carry everything from ranchwear to cheesemaking and from fencing supplies to salves and vaccines."

A great site to model is http://www.kitguy.com. All his content is in the middle and all the Banner Ads are in right column. For his store, he is using Tool King's product data feed: http://www.kitguy.com/tk/shop.php?page=S-1960 which displays each product individually. From your site, it would be hard for a customer to find a product base on their needs. For example: customer clicks on the banner, goes to merchant site and might not even find what they wanted to look for in the first place.

Since we're not all blessed with the ability to distinguish what looks good, Peter at Website Magazine is asking us to reconsider the use of pre-structured design. In his article, Rethinking the Use of Pre-Structure Design, he gives a few tips on choosing a template:

It’s difficult, if not impossible, to determine the most used pre-structured design template on the Web. But there are certainly a few that stand out (if not scream out) as popular among template users. Most design template resources provide a rough idea of how many times a template has been downloaded and that figure can provide a guide on what to stay away from if you want the design you choose to be unique. Case in point, popular template RedTie has been downloaded a whopping 172,000 times since first being added to OSWD.org.

However, don’t dismiss a template purely on the number of downloads — it can indicate a platform’s stability. If a template is rarely downloaded but has been available for months or years, that might indicate it’s difficult to use or customize. Also check for active demos because they can provide a glimpse of the customization possibilities. And look for user comments to get an idea of any pre-existing flaws or issues.

Want to see which words are getting searched and ranked daily? I got a newsletter from Search Marketing Standard yesterday which shared 5 Free Must-Have Keyword Research Tools:

My First Affiliate Convention

The Affiliate Convention held in Denver, Colorado was considered a success according to WebmasterRadio.fm. I was there and can say it was a pretty good turn out. Can't complain when the event was free and beer was served for free. Free beer... can't beat that!

I was expecting a long line, however, it didn't take no more than five minutes to get signed in. Picked up my pass and I was good to go. It was still early (about thirty minutes early) , good time to go find an empty seat in the main affiliate room (room was still empty at the time, as you can see the picture in the left).

I picked out all the affiliate classes in which I thought was most interesting. Here's what my first day schedule looked like:

I came across some helpful tips on how to get your site indexed in Google and other search engines quickly, while browsing through Andrew Shotland's blog, Local SEO Guide. Recently he has been helping people with their new sites, however, he has been doing this for years and these are the some of the helpful things he has picked up:

Navigate to the page with a Google toolbar enabled browser.
Email the site to a friend using gmail.
Mention the url using the http protocol and www on message boards w/o a link (http://www.blah.com/). Try not to be spammy.
Make toolbar requests to compete.com , alexa.com & quantcast.com.
Buy some Google Ads to your pages (this forces Google to crawl these pages to assess your quality score)

Oppose California Bill 178

As you may already know, California recently proposed bills similar to the law that recently passed in New York. This didn’t come as a surprise as it was foreseen by many and the domino pieces will probably continue to fall. However, PMA (Performance Marketing Alliance) is getting a group letter sent to Assembly Committee members responsible for evaluating Bill 178 to oppose it.

Here are 5 quick tips to help with your article. The tips were posted on Ezine Articles Blog by Penny:

1. Refrain from using excessive keywords or keyphrase repetition as this provides for a poor user experience and your article does not read naturally.

2. Use correct spacing and formatting. Let your article word wrap naturally and place one vertical space between each paragraph break. A “Vertical Space” means to hit enter twice when at the end of a paragraph.

3. Write unique content. Do not spin your previously written articles into the same regurgitated content. You owe it to your readers to provide unique value in each one of your articles.

4. Make sure that your article body delivers on what is promised in the title. The most common mistake is when authors lead their readers away from the article to deliver what was promised in the title. This again provides poor user experience and is a huge trust violation.

5. Proofread your articles and look for spelling and grammar mistakes. If English is not your primary language, have your articles proofread by someone whose primary language is English prior to submission.

During the past few months, I have noticed a sales increase from our coupon affiliate partners. It's not surprising as I have also been looking for more ways to save. I then came across an article last week, "Coupon and Deal Sites Up in Down Economy" by Lisa Picarille. Here are some interesting information from the article:

“As the nation’s economic woes continue, consumers have become increasingly careful about their purchasing decisions, with most now seeing online research as a normal part of their buying behavior, even for small purchases. Retailers that offer discounts, special promotions and product comparisons to engage – and keep – these consumers will have more success than those that continue to try striking emotional chords through traditional channels. These strategies, when combined with an understanding of the various online shopping personalities, can be effective in winning over new consumers and influencing hardcore shoppers.”

The study went to state that, hardcore online shoppers, termed “weekly shoppers”, can be influenced by coupons and discounts, but so, too, can a new consumer segment PSB discovered called “recession shoppers” – those who will shop more online if their personal economic circumstances deteriorate. "We think we would be a great fit for your campaign, however, we need a few specific banner sizes that are not currently offered with your campaign. Would it be possible to create a 300x250 banner?"

"Yes we can," I replied. Now that I have taken over the responsibility to create the daily deal banners, I took it upon myself to create a 300x250 banner as well. I'm going to be honest with you, before this I have never worked with Photoshop.

I created the banner in hopes of accomplishing two things:

Branding
Call to Action

I had to make sure our business name, logo, and slogans were going to be consistent with what is on our website. This transfers into using the same colors and text on the banners as well. Branding banner ads should help customers establish a link between your website and a particular product or service.

Once I have decided which message I would like to get across, the next step was to create a call to action. A call to action button will simply point your customer in the direction you want to lead them. Using words that prompt the user to take immediate action such as "Click Here", "Visit Now", and "Shop Now" will increase your click through rate and conversion rate.

The banner above was the final product. It's just something very simple, but hopefully it'll have accomplished the purpose of my original intent. Affiliate Link Encoder v2.0

One of the best tools for affiliates just recently got better. AvantLink made some significant changes to the Affiliate Link Encoder tool that they released a year ago. If you own a blog or forum and haven’t put this tool to use, I highly recommend using it today. For those that already has it implemented, you don’t have to change a thing. It is full backwards-compatibility with the original version of the tool.

Here are the improvements AvantLink have listed on AvantLink's Blog:

The ALE now supports the encoding of plain text (a.k.a. “keyword encoding”) in your page content. Previously, only pre-existing direct links such as www.toolking.com would be converted to affiliate tracking links. Now, it’s possible to configure the ALE to not even require an existing direct link to the merchant: instead, it can operate simply on the mention of the merchant.
Now you may be thinking: “What about all of my pre-existing links - I don’t want those rewritten!“ Don’t worry, we’re not going to completely mangle your page: keywords that appear inside existing links are left alone.
With keyword encoding turned on, the ALE will (by default) automatically look for the name or URL of any of your active merchants in page content, and turn those into trackable links. You can override this default behavior by choosing which, if any, merchants should be encoded for a given ALE deployment.
You can also specify completely custom keyword/key-phrase associations to encode.
You can even specify certain pieces of text that should not be encoded as affiliate links; some people call these skip-words.
We’ve added the ability to specify some CSS/formatting for your encoded links. Built-in options include adding a “title” tag of “This is an affiliate ad link.”, a double-underline format, or even specifying a custom CSS class name to use for all of the links. You can mix & match these options too, to further customize your setup.
Lastly, when you use the ALE tool now you actually create a subscription/configuration entry. This allows you to make changes to your ALE deployment without going back through all of your pages to update the javascript include. It also allows some more advanced reporting on our end, such as which of your ALE subscriptions a particular click-through or sale resulted from; for keyword encoding our reports will even show which word or phrase was clicked on, leading to a particular sale.

To get started, just go to the “Tools” page of your affiliate account and click on “Create a new ALE subscription”. You'll wonder how you ever managed your blog/forum without this tool.

A bright full moon lit up the road for us tonight, casting demonic tree figures that laughed at us while the winds blew hard. Our car had run out of gas and we're in the middle of no where. A Tale of Two Affiliates by Shawn Collins

We’re in the middle of this insane financial crisis… the worst since the Great Depression, according to some folks. Stocks are tanking, credit is evaporating, and there is talk of a partial nationalization of some banks.

The way I see it, affiliate marketers have two options right now: curl up in the fetal position and moan or put that entrepreneur hat on good and tight and kick some ass.

It’s survival of the affiliate fittest and some players will fall away. Will you choose to be a victim or a victor?

These days remind me of Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities…

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to heaven, we were all going direct the other way - in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.”

I don’t know about you, but I am not putting up the white flag just because the talking heads on the news say the sky is falling.

Repeal New York Tax Law

The New York Tax Law could have a domino effect, which is why I believe this is an important issue for all merchants and affiliates. Here is some good news from NY Affiliate Voice - Federal Action to Repeal the Tax:

This is really breaking news. I have received an encouraging email from our lawyer’s office in regards to action on the federal level. Last week Mr. Jim Bunning, a Senator from Kentucky introduced a bill that would eliminate affiliates from the definition of physical presence within a state. If it were to pass, this would mean that states would be prohibited from taxing out of state merchants if the only revenue sharing connection are affiliates.

While still in the very early stages, there is an encouraging sign. Having a sponsor is important, and there is a sponsor for the bill, Mr Bunning. The bill was read twice, as required, and was referred to the Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation. The bill number is S. 3670

"All the candy corn that was ever made was made in 1911," as comedian Lewis Black discovers. It's love or loathing when it comes to the king of Halloween candy. Surprisingly, around 20 million pounds of candy corn are sold each year according to National Confectioners Association.

While doing a quick search on Google.com, I came across an article that states candy corn can make kids more intelligent. Instead of just filling kids up with sugar, corn syrup and honey (prime ingredients), you can use it to teach kids the shape and colors of the candy. Good buzz is kind of like the Energizer Bunny, it can keep on going. It can travel from mouth to ear, to blog, to text message, and the cycle can be on self repeat for a while. Video marketing has been a buzz on the internet for a few years now (as I’m sure you’ve already heard).

So... how about them Broncos? I'm not really sure how to start this post, even though I had just read on a blog about how to write an introduction. One of the tips given on how to start off an introduction is to ask a good question. I know my question will probably not engage the readers to intellectually analyze, 'how are the Denver Broncos?' It won't develop any real response nor stir any emotions (unless you're a true Broncos fan), but aren't those Broncos good this year? =) Whether you're a Broncos fan or not, I think everyone can enjoy what Tool King has to offer this weekend.
